I put this post here because it seems that some folks at the Sardelac Sanitarium seem pretty sensitive about criticism (ok, ridicule) of their desire for a bard class.

I don't understand why someone would want to play a bard. It's not just about the skills because the same skills can be translated into a mesmer or other caster support character. But why a bard?

I can understand other classes: a ripped fella swinging a great axe or a lithe woman who can call up firestorms .... but why would someone want to play a fella in purple breeches skipping about the battlefield strumming his lute or playing pan pipes? Please explain that one to me. Why are some people so adamant about wanting to be a bard?

If there must be bards here's my version.

1. The male armor doesn't make you look like someone with a "Take my lunch money and beat me up" sign on your back.

2. Here's the good part. You can insert your own music. I wouldn't mind playing Hendrix or even Tom Petty while casting spells. If nobody else likes my music then, tough luck, pal - I'm the bard dammit!

Ever played FFXI? Bards make teh party with jacked mana regen and health regen and stun, sleep and paralyze songs... they have their uses.. but yes.. look dumb

My love for the bard class actually stems from Lineage2, enjoying the Warcryer, Bladedancer and Swordsinger classes, which all work as bards (with melee support). I wouldn't want to see a pure "bard" class with flutes and violins, but rather something to the effect of the Lineage2 support classes.

As much maligned Bards are as a character class, they're also a pretty well loved staple. If Bard was to come to Guild Wars, I'd imagine them fitting right in by having an Attribute and skill lines such as Final Fantasy Tactics/XI's Bard, that is decent Area of Effect party buffs, or something like the Dancer in Tactics with decent Area of Effect enemy defuffs.

It could be sort of like Spirits, but something the character needs to maintain. (IE: you're preforming a song)

Also, the idea of a Instrument weapon class would awesome. All El Kabong style with a lute.

Not to mention, a swashbuckling hybrid Rogue/Swordsman Attribute and Skill line (Rapier instead of plain old "Sword" anybody?) thing would be awesome, too. I kind of like the idea of a swordsman not being a stupid looking meathead in bulky armor.

I couldn't really give an opinion on this one. It would be cool if they could make the class and do enough to differentiate it from other support casters. Still, I'd probably play one, just for the novelty of it.

Oh and before I forget to say this, I don't know how well it would synergize with most other classes in the game.
